The Use of ICT in a Physics Education Research Group

Abstract
Dr. Robert Beichner is Alumni Distinguished Professor of Physics at North Carolina State University. He is the Director of the Physics Education Research and Development Group, one of the largest such teams in the U.S. He has co-authored (with Raymond Serway) the 5th edition of Physics for Scientists and Engineers, the leading introductory physics textbook. It is used by more than 1/3 of all science, math, and engineering majors nationwide. He has written several pieces of award-winning instructional software, including VideoGraph, a package which started a new physics pedagogy called "video-based labs" – an approach now used at hundreds of colleges and high schools. His concept evaluation tests are being used by teachers and researchers around the world. His largest current project is SCALE-UP (Student-Centered Activities for Large Enrollment Undergraduate Programs). This new classroom environment and teaching approach is being adopted at some of the leading institutions across the country, including MIT (which hopes to shift all its introductory physics courses to this approach.) He has won numerous teaching awards, including the O'Haus Award for Innovative Science Teaching from the National Science Teachers Association. He is also the editor of PER-CENTRAL, a web-based clearinghouse of information for the Physics Education Research Community.
