Reinventing Human Communication: Trends from Silicon Valley

Abstract

Technology is causing the evolution of new social trends in communication and entertainment: Now consumers want more control and power. Consumer demand is driving convergence and next generation services. This is an inversion of the technology driven evolution in telecommunication of the previous years. These social shifts are impacting the industry and technology, changing the nature of time and distance, place and space. An overview on both social and technology trends as seen from Silicon Valley will be presented.

Short Biography of Dr. Ursula Oesterle

Ursula Oesterle has a degree in natural science from ETHZ. She worked at the PSI in Zurich in semiconductors before doing her PhD in photonics at EPFL. After her PhD she perused her research at EPFL working on European project. In 1996, she took on the additional task as program manager of the Swiss Priority Program Optics. After a business course at IMD, she joined Swisscom Innovations in Bern in 2001. Beginning of 2003 she moved to the USA to run the Swisscom Outpost in Silicon Valley.
