The Executive Board of ETH Zürich has approved the ETH World project «Neptun - Laptops for Students» for 2003/04. The most important change in this third year of the project is that it will be extended to all of ETH Zurich, i.e. there will no longer be specific «Neptun departments». The central Neptun helpdesks will thus be available to everyone at ETH.
"We will continue to improve the procurement process", said the project manager Immo Noack from the Department of Computer Science. "This year we will have only purchase window at the beginning of the winter semester. As last year, I expect around 2 000 laptops to be purchased by students, staff and ETH units."
The suppliers will be determined in the next months. The number of laptop models will be restricted so as to guarantee the best possible conditions (price, support, delivery, logistics).
The integration of laptops in the education process is also a crucial topic for further strengthening the broad impact of the Neptun project. Dr. Eva Ruiz from the Institute for Computer Systems is exploring this issue in her postgraduate diploma thesis in management. The objective of her work is to analyze the current situation and make recommendations for how ETH could better support and encourage faculty to make use of the laptop facilities in their teaching.
