Webclass is a teaching tool created by the Chair for the History of Technology at ETH Zurich. This tool provides the possibility to combine historical content placed on the web with different learning modes, such as self-directed learning, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Webclass uses OLAT (Online Learning and Testing), a learning environment giving students access to information, lecture notes and assignments independently of time and space. Students can also work together in virtual groups. An extensive testing tool is available for self-assessment and testing.
Webclass consists of four courses, offering an introduction into the history of technology for students of all ETH departments. The four modules ? History of Technology of the Body, of Energy, of Communications, and of the Environment ? have the same structure, extent and complexity and include 10?12 lessons. The modules discuss historical events and developments, offering background information, timetables, images, audio and video files, and other historical sources that help the students to develop a better understanding of the particular subject. Biographical dates of historical persons, citation and link collections, and bibliographies complete the materials. Every lesson has its own interpretation and assignment page, offering the students suggestions how to interpret and analyze past events from a certain perspective, as well as different types of assignments.
