ETH World, in cooperation with sunrise and Zurich Public Transport (VBZ) has concluded an experiment to test wireless LAN in a mobile environment. During the summer semester from 30 March to 2 July 2004 ETH students and staff were be able to access the Internet in the shuttle bus connecting the ETH Main Building and the Hönggerberg campus.
For this test the bus was equipped with a wireless LAN access point. The data traffic was routed to the ETH computer network over a GPRS connection provided by sunrise. The technical implementation was based on a project work by two students, Daniel Grob and Nicolas Cedraschi, of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.
The objective of the experiment was twofold. On the one hand the technical robustness of the system was tested, on the other it was important to get to know the needs of the users and their acceptance of Internet access in public transport.
This virtual bridge between the two physical locations of ETH Zurich was been made possible thanks to the cooperation between ETH World, sunrise, and VBZ.
